Agricultural Science, B.S.

About the Major

Two agriculture students kneel and measure the growth of a coffee plant at Cal Poly Pomona.

This major covers all areas of agriculture and is an outstanding option that will prepare you for any general agricultural career.

It also prepares students who want to teach agriculture in secondary schools in California. Specialized pre-professional and professional courses are offered for undergraduate and graduate students. To become a teacher, students must also have two years' practical experience in agriculture and complete the agricultural specialist credential.

The degree requirements break down into several areas:

  • Major requirements: These cover a wide variety of courses. The curricula range from learning about basic biology and general chemistry to sustainable agriculture animal production, accounting for agribusiness, and ethical studies of food, nutrition, and health disparities. The full list is in the curriculum sheet for the major at the link below. Course descriptions are available in the University Catalog for the current academic year.
  • Major electives: Students should consult their advisors to determine what courses to take.
  • General Education (GE) requirements: Students should consult their Degree Progress Report (DPR) for information regarding these requirements. Unless your major requires specific GE courses, you should refer to the list of approved GE courses in the University Catalog.
  • The Graduate Writing Test is suspended until Fall 2025. Students entering Cal Poly Pomona before Fall 2025 are not required to take it.

If you have any questions, contact your academic advisor and make an appointment. Drop-in hours are also available, both in-person and virtually. Faculty mentors and student peer advisors can also assist. Visit the academic advising link for more information about these resources.

Alumna Success Story

"The polytechnic way ─ learn by doing ─ it was really important to me because I’m a visual learner, and to be able to apply what you learn in class, and what you learn through the book, and do it with your hands was so important to me."
